Top 5 Supplements for Hip and Joint Pain Relief in Dogs

We all age and one of the earlier signs are those achy joints and that painful muscle stiffness.

We’ve all seen it happen—your pooch can’t jump on the couch the way they used to or they tweaked a ligament chasing a squirrel—and recovery from these age-related aches or untimely injuries can be both costly and have long healing times. Did you know about 20% of all dogs older than a year will have arthritis, and a whopping 80% of all dogs will experience joint pain in their lifetime? So it really is no surprise that many fur parents are turning to supplements to help alleviate pain and improve mobility.

Let's explore five supplements, backed by leading research, that may provide significant relief for dogs dealing with hip and joint issues.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin

Glucosamine and chondroitin are popular supplements (found in our SQUIRREL! pops), often used together to alleviate joint pain in dogs. They work by supporting cartilage repair and reducing inflammation in the joints. A study from Frontiers in Veterinary Science found that while glucosamine and chondroitin didn’t outperform other supplements like marine fatty acids or NSAIDs in short-term trials, they did offer some benefit, especially when used over longer periods for managing chronic symptoms in dogs or to proactively improve joint health over the lifetime of the dog. That said, the effectiveness of glucosamine and chondroitin is often improved when in combination with other treatments.

 Green-Lipped Mussels

Green-lipped mussel extract, derived from a type of mussel found in New Zealand, has gained popularity for its ability to reduce inflammation. This extract contains omega-3 fatty acids and other compounds with anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown that PCSO-524 (a patented green-lipped mussel extract) can significantly improve mobility and reduce pain in dogs with hip osteoarthritis. In a study involving 75 dogs, those given PCSO-524 showed improvement in joint function and pain scores comparable to those given NSAIDs, without the potential side effects of long-term NSAID use. This makes green-lipped mussels a promising natural alternative. Green-lipped mussels will be a key ingredient in many puppops recipes in the future.

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)

MSM, a sulfur-containing compound, is often combined with glucosamine and chondroitin in joint supplements. It helps reduce inflammation and improve flexibility by supporting collagen formation, which is essential for joint repair. A study in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association reported that MSM can reduce pain and improve joint function in dogs when used as part of a broader supplement regimen. This supplement is especially popular for dogs with chronic osteoarthritis, as it can be safely used over long periods.

Turmeric (Curcumin)

Turmeric, or more specifically curcumin, is a natural anti-inflammatory that has been shown to reduce pain in dogs with arthritis. Turmeric works by inhibiting certain enzymes that cause inflammation. Although turmeric isn't as extensively studied in dogs as some other supplements, preliminary research has shown promise. According to a review in PLOS ONE, curcumin can reduce pain levels and improve mobility in dogs with osteoarthritis when used consistently, especially when combined with black pepper extract (piperine) to enhance absorption. This makes it a good option for owners looking for a natural, food-based supplement. Turmeric is a key ingredient in both our Busy Bee and Chicken Soup puppops recipes.

Final Thoughts on Supplementing for Joint Health

Supplements can play a big role in managing joint pain and improving quality of life in dogs with hip and joint issues. However, it’s important to consult a veterinarian before starting any new supplement, especially if your dog is already on other medications. While supplements can be very helpful, they work best as part of a comprehensive approach that may include diet, exercise, and sometimes prescription medications, depending on the severity of your dog’s condition.

With the support of well-researched supplements like green-lipped mussel, krill oil, and glucosamine, you can help your dog stay active and comfortable for longer, even as they age.
